NEMS 2010 Summer Volunteer Internship Program
NOTE: The application period for the 2010 Internship Program is CLOSED. Please visit this page in 2011. Thanks for your interest!
North East Medical Services
(NEMS) is looking for college students who are interested in pursuing a
health-related career for our Summer Health Care Volunteer Internship Program.
The
goal of the program is to expose students to the dynamic environment of a
community health center so that they can better understand how health care is
delivered to an underserved population. Participants will also have the
opportunity to attend several informational lectures on career paths in health
care and other health-related topics. Candidates should have a strong interest
in working with the underserved Asian population.
This part-time volunteer
internship will begin in late June and end in late August (dates and hours are
flexible according to the student’s summer break schedule).
There are two
different tracks you can apply for: Health Education and Community
Health Services. Please see program track descriptions below:
- Health Education: Interns in the Health Education track will receive training on how to improve communication skills in
the health setting and learn how to deliver culturally competent health
education messages. Primary responsibilities include 1) counseling pediatric
and adult patients on healthy lifestyle behaviors and 2) developing health
education materials for our patients in Chinese and English. Interns will work
closely with the NEMS health care team as well as have the opportunity to
interact directly with patients. Candidates should exhibit a strong interest in
working with the Asian underserved, have basic knowledge of Asian health
issues, and have strong communication/presentation skills.
Fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin is required.
The Health Education Intern Program is located at our San Bruno Clinic at 2574 San Bruno Avenue in San Francisco.
- Community Health Services:
Interns in the Community
Health Services track will have the opportunity to rotate through several
departments, including Laboratory and Radiology, and learn about/assist with
services offered in each department. Students will gain hands-on experience
with patient/clinic flow and learn how a community health clinic is run overall.
Interns will have the opportunity to work directly with patients and the NEMS
health care team. Candidates should have a strong interest in biochemistry,
community/public health, and working with underserved populations. Fluency
in Cantonese and/or Mandarin is highly preferred.
The Community Health Services Intern Program is located
at our main clinic at 1520 Stockton Street, San Francisco.
